Children in grade school, particularly in the first through sixth grades, are fascinated by science, the environment around them, and especially with how things work. Many schools request that children participate in science fairs. Children may be assigned a particular project, or they may have to come up with science project ideas on their own. There are several ways children can come up with science project ideas if they can't think of ones on their own.
Have your child check your local newspaper. If it has a children's section it will often list ideas for fun science projects.
The library is another resource that children can use to get science project ideas. There are many books on science, as well as books specifically geared toward science projects. There are many helpful websites that guide parents and children through many different types of science projects. These come with material lists, objectives for the child to learn, special instructions for safety, storage recommendations, and recommendations on how to display the science project.
Explore the great outdoors and note any questions your children may ask that could be worked into a science fair project.
Think about pets. Have your children brainstorm science fair projects that could include their pets. They could experiment with different training techniques, test different brands of dog food, compare one pet's behavior to another, and so on. The possibilities are endless, and children generally love these types of experiments.
It is important to remember that no matter how the science project ideas are obtained, or how much you may want to help, this is a learning experience for your child. Be sure to let your child do the work independently and only interject when he is frustrated, asks for assistance, or is using materials that are sharp or dangerous.
